GS Yuasa, the world’s leading battery manufacturer, has begun the construction phase of a cutting-edge dual chemical battery system at Portsmouth International Port with the successful delivery of the system’s 20-foot purpose-built container housing.
The unit was delivered by road to the port last week, having been under construction at GS Yuasa’s factory at Ebbw Vale in Wales. The container arrived empty to ensure the valuable battery technology going inside had no risk of damage or fault. The next phase will take place in September with the final installation of the ENL and Lithium-ion batteries.
The industry leading technology contributes towards the cutting-edge Port Energy Systems Optimisation (PESO) project in Portsmouth. The project will provide power for electric vehicle charging and localised grid support. It will include a dual chemical (lead acid and Lithium-ion) hybrid energy storage system as its centrepiece.
Located at the front of the port’s freight entrance, the new GS Yuasa dual chemical energy storage system comes in the form of a weatherproof shelter that will be able to supply 100kW of power. It will use Lithium-ion technology as well as standard lead acid Yuasa ENL battery technology. These batteries are also manufactured at GS Yuasa’s Ebbw Vale factory with final assembly and integration of the entire system taking place at the port itself. The system’s lithium batteries come from Japan.
This is the second phase of the dual chemical battery project in Portsmouth. Once up and running this will allow electric vehicles around the port to be fast charged during the day from electricity supplied overnight at a lower tariff. Consequently, saving time and money whilst contributing to the crucial environmental needs.
Mark Greer, General Sales Manager – Reserve & Renewable Power Division at GS Yuasa Battery Sales UK Ltd said: “We are pleased that the delivery of the dual chemical battery system’s container housing went smoothly and was a success. The PESO project is an exciting venture and we are proud to be a part of it. Our containerised dual-chemical battery system has been designed to create an environmentally conscious energy storage solution. We are looking forward to seeing the next steps of the project unfold in the coming months”
Alongside dual chemical systems, GS Yuasa also offer a fully lithium energy storage system for maximum capacity and capability. These more advanced systems allow a higher number of EV’s to be charged at a faster and more cost-effective rate, making it the most powerful solution currently on the market.
