MS for Blaenau Gwent, Alun Davies visits GS Yuasa Energy Storage System production at IP Site Solutions

Representatives from GS Yuasa were on hand to show Alun Davies, the Member of the Senedd for Blaenau Gwent, the production of their state-of-the-art Energy Storage System (ESS) containers when he visited IP Site Solutions in Ebbw Vale.

Based a stone’s throw away from GS Yuasa’s factory, IP Site Solutions are the supplier of the purpose-built containers that house GS Yuasa’s purpose built ESS solutions. During the visit, Davies witnessed two containers that were under construction and looked at the lithium-ion and VRLA battery technology they will house.

Established in 1981, GS Yuasa have produced Yuasa-branded lead acid batteries in South Wales for 40 years. The battery manufacturer recently announced a multi-million pound investment with support from Welsh Government funding of up to £2.5m.

This investment will create over 100 new jobs, protect 360 existing positions and see the introduction of new energy efficient production equipment along with a lithium-ion module assembly line – the first outside of Japan.

All GS Yuasa Energy Storage Systems utilise these lithium-ion modules and are designed for various energy storage applications such as grid support, UPS, electric vehicle charging and reserve and renewable energy. They represent the very latest in battery technology, providing dependable power housed in a bespoke containerised solution that can be sited externally – eliminating the floor space required to house batteries internally.

The two containers viewed by Mr Davies are destined to become dual chemical Energy Storage Systems, using the battery manufacturer’s lithium-ion modules and VRLA batteries. The two units will be sited at GS Yuasa’s Rassau factory and will store the energy created by the 3,000 recently installed solar panels to support the factory’s energy requirements.

Jonathan Sambruck, Senior Manufacturing Engineer for GS Yuasa Europe Ltd said: “We were delighted to meet the Member of the Senedd for Blaenau Gwent, Alun Davies as part of his visit to IP Site Solutions and highlight the benefits our energy storage systems can bring to applications around the UK.

“As our investment in production at our Ebbw Vale facility continues, we understand the importance of utilising the incredible skillset of local businesses. IP Site Solutions have worked alongside us as we develop these systems, so it was great to be able to share this experience with the IP Solutions Team.”
