GS Yuasa powers final H-IIA rocket launch and Japan’s climate-smart satellite mission with proven lithium-Ion technology

GS Yuasa Battery Europe Ltd is proud to celebrate another historic space achievement, as GS Yuasa’s lithium-ion batteries have powered the successful launch of Japan’s H-IIA Launch Vehicle No. 50 (Final Unit) and the onboard GOSAT-GW satellite, an advanced spacecraft designed to track greenhouse gases and monitor the planet’s water cycle.

The mission, launched on 29 June 2025 by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, marks the final flight of the renowned H-IIA rocket series and features GS Yuasa Technology Ltd. lithium-ion batteries – installed in both the launch vehicle and the GOSAT-GW satellite, developed by Mitsubishi Electric.

GS Yuasa batteries have been integral to every H-IIA and H-IIB launch since 2002, delivering reliable performance and power for over 20 years of continuous support to Japanese space missions. This latest milestone also sees GS Yuasa’s space-grade lithium-ion technology, already trusted in more than 250 spacecraft globally, powering a satellite tasked with nothing less than helping the world tackle climate change.

The GOSAT-GW (Global Observing SATellite for Greenhouse gases and Water cycle) forms part of a high-profile project from Japan’s Ministry of the Environment and Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. The satellite will provide critical data to track emissions, monitor climate-induced shifts in Earth’s water cycle, and support practical applications like weather forecasting and fisheries management.

Mike Taylor, Product Manager for GS Yuasa Battery Europe, said: “Our lithium-ion cells are engineered to operate in the most extreme conditions known to science—from 6,500 metres below the ocean to 36,000 kilometres above the Earth, this mission highlights not only the unmatched performance and durability of our space batteries, but the contribution they make toward a more sustainable and connected future.”

“To see our batteries once again play a key role in such a significant mission is a huge source of pride. The quality, reliability, and innovation behind our space batteries are the same principles that drive our lithium-ion solutions for a wide range of critical applications here on Earth.”

The same advanced cell technology used in space continues to shape the lithium-ion solutions GS Yuasa delivers for Earth-bound applications—across transport, industry, and renewable energy.

As the curtain falls on the H-IIA program, GS Yuasa’s batteries continue to soar, driving the future of both space exploration and Earth’s clean energy transition.
