Whether you’re new to driving or a seasoned veteran, there are must-have items to keep stocked in your cab. We’ve put together a useful list of the essentials for life on the open road…

1) Shower flip-flops

Many showers aren’t exactly known for their cleanliness. Avoid any germs by carrying shower flip-flops with you when you’re on the job!

2) Travel toiletries — toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, soap

Every driver should make a wash kit filled with travel size containers of all the basics.

3) Water and non-perishable food

It’s important to stay hydrated and to eat well, especially when eating out can be both time consuming and not always the healthiest option. Keep ample water and healthy, non-perishable snacks in-cab.

4) Dash-mounted mobile phone holder

Safety is key. Keep within the law by using a hands-free, Bluetooth setup for your phone.

5) Sleeping bag/blanket + pillow

Storing sheets and bedding can be tricky. Some drivers find it much more convenient to have a sleeping bag instead.

6) Torch

You never know when you might need to step out of your truck at night to check the engine or tyres.

7) Gloves

According to drivers, flatbed truckers find gloves to be particularly crucial. Not only do gloves provide warmth on cold days, but they’re a good way to protect your hands from injury.

8) Bad weather gear

Given the mileage drivers cover, it’s important to be prepared for rain or shine so make sure to keep an extra jacket and pair of boots in-cab.

9) Earplugs

This item is very relevant to team drivers, particularly if the co-driver snores! A set of earplugs ensures good rest, which every driver needs to be safe and efficient on the job.

10) Toilet roll

Companies must allow delivery drivers access to toilets as part of a Health and Safety Executive guidance update on workers’ welfare. These facilities should have a good supply of toilet roll. However, its always a good idea to keep a stock of this bathroom essential just in case.
