GS Yuasa provides JR Fukushima railway station with emergency back up power

GS Yuasa Corporation has delivered two sets of lithium-ion batteries and anti-disaster power conditioners to JR Fukushima Railway Station in Japan. The system, which delivers approximately 500kWh, will be used to provide up to 12 hours of emergency backup power if the main power supply fails and will allow the station to be used as a disaster response facility.

The introduction of GS Yuasa’s new system will help JR Fukushima to become a model station for the East Japan Railway Company’s “Ecoste” initiatives. These involve the adoption of various environmental preservation technologies including energy saving and the use of renewable energy, such as solar power, at railway stations.

Thanks to a power supply system delivered by Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, over 23% of the power consumed at the station is now provided by in-house power generation. The introduction of GS Yuasa’s lithium-ion batteries will ensure a dependable power supply during emergencies such as power outages caused by natural disasters.

The storage battery system delivered by GS Yuasa for this project uses the LIM50E-12G lithium-ion battery module. By using powerful battery management equipment, this system constantly monitors voltage, temperature and current for all lithium-ion units and has been developed specifically for smart grids and power storage applications.

Through the spread of power conditioners and lithium-ion batteries, the GS Yuasa Group continues to contribute to the expansion of disaster response facilities, the building of safe and secure living environments, and a reduction in the environmental footprint.
