Yuasa Battery Sales (UK) has announced that GS Yuasa lithium-ion batteries manufactured by GS Yuasa Lithium Power, Inc. are to be installed on the International Space Station (ISS) following an order from Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne (PWR).
The ISS is currently powered by nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) cells and PWR will replace these with GS Yuasa’s Li-ion LSE134 batteries. As its power source, the Li-ion batteries will make a significant contribution to the ongoing operation of the ISS.
Over the past few years, NASA and PWR have conducted evaluations of GS Yuasa’s technological and manufacturing capabilities as well as the performance and quality of the company’s Li-ion batteries. The recent order reflects GS Yuasa’s ability to meet their high standards.
Featuring a capacity of 134Ah, GS Yuasa developed the LSE134 Li-ion batteries specifically for the International Space Station’s power requirements. The mass and volumetric energy densities of the batteries are around three times higher than those of the NiMH cells currently used. The new batteries are expected to power the ISS for more than a decade.
